Cut root veggies, like carrots and potatoes, into smaller pieces as they take longer to cook due to their density.
It's usually a good idea to brown and strain meat before adding it to your slow cooker as this cuts down on the amount of fat in your meal.
Your slow cooker loses heat every time you lift the lid, so avoid doing so as much as you can. Opening the unit too often can mean you need to add to your overall cooking time due to lose of heat.
Never fill your slow cooker more than ¾ full.
